The web is wonderful for music in that it makes it more available (and not just illegally) and provides recommendations. But many of the “if you like that you’ll also like this” type of recommendations didn’t work too well for me.
One of the ways in which 2007 has been a musically interesting year for me so far concerns some of the people who were previously recommended, but didn’t make much of an impression. They are coming out with new stuff that does grab me. The best example so far is M Ward.
The most recent example is Sondre Lerche. I’m currently listening to his 2007 album, Phantom Punch. It has more… well, punch, than the Sondre stuff I remember hearing before.
The same strange thing seems to be happening with Sondre as happened with M. Going back to some of his earlier stuff, I like it more than I remember liking it. Perhaps I am finding different stuff. Perhaps the new stuff has given me the bug for the musician in question.
Or maybe I am, in a “the web is writing us” way, becoming the musical consumer the web wants me to be. Anyway, here’s a video from a couple of years ago, with a retro style fitting Sondre’s music.
