YouTube as Time Machine

Fred Wilson has an excellent post about the state of the music business. The starting point is a YouTube video of the Arctic Monkeys playing a song from their soon-to-be-released second album; “surely over 10,000 people have gotten introduced to this song in the past month, some portion of whom are likely to buy the record.”

I’ve been visiting the musical past, as well as the musical future, at YouTube recently. I was delighted to find clips of the show that Richard Thompson and David Byrne did together back in 1992, including this two-cover medley.

My favorite part is the switch from the Texas Tornados to ? and the Mysterians, about 3 minutes in. I like this clip even better than them doing Psycho Killer together.
