The most recent update to WordPress.com’s Features page describes advertising.
To support the service we may occasionally show Adsense ads on your blog, however we do this very rarely. In the future you’ll be able to purchase an upgrade to either turn the ads off or show your own Adsense ads and make money from your blog.
How much will this upgrade cost? The Guardian quoted Matt: “at least $15 (£7.45) a year per blog.”
It is already possible for those of us who pay for the CSS upgrade to disable the ads. Since the ads display in a table, we can simply {display:none} the tables away. There are two potential problems with this. First, I think that this will make “real tables,” as well as ad tables, go away. Second, {display:none} is not the official way of turning off ads.
Of the issues discussed at the WordPress.com forums, few have been as time-consuming and frustrating as ads on blogs. I hope that this will change soon…
There are no problems with turning off real tables. Real tables will not be in div.postcontent anyway. 🙂
div.postcontent wraps everything in a post, so it would contain any tables you use.
Well I have never known anyone put a table in a post. But if they did the scheme could easily be adjusted. Nice of you to take part in good humour Matt. 🙂
Yes, we’re sort of unofficially discouraged from including tables in our posts (there’s no ‘table’ button in either of the text editors and I doubt many themes bother styling them). Tables are used in a lot of those ‘if you were a Harry Potter character, who would you be?’ memes, but the only place I’ve seen them on a wordpress.com is engtech’s theme comparison posts.
Thanks for the great work
