Open Yahoo?

Yahoo’s Open Invitation is the title of a Business Week article by Catherine Holahan. It refers to Yahoo’s “plans to release source codes.” Now this sounds like big news.

In fact it isn’t. The term source codes is used to refer to APIs. Although it’s good to see Yahoo exposing more APIs, it seems more like catching up than breaking new ground.

For me personally, the way in which I’d most like to see Yahoo be more open is by providing POP3 access to mail, without requiring purchase of a premium service. Then I can read the spam that Yahoo mail lets through from the comfort of my iGoogle start page.
